Defra said on Monday 3 August that £20 million has been opened for robotics and automation projects intended for English farming. The competition, delivered with Innovate UK under the Farming Innovation Programme, is aimed at technologies that can plant, tend and harvest crops, with ministers presenting the scheme as a response to pressure at the busiest points of the agricultural calendar. According to the department, innovative agri-tech businesses can bid for a share of the fund by working with researchers and farmers to develop the next generation of automated tools. The policy emphasis is practical rather than purely experimental, with government backing directed towards systems that can move from research into on-farm use.
The announcement sits within a larger funding package. Defra said this round forms part of a recent £53 million increase in support and takes the total funding made available this year for advanced farming research and technology to £123 million. The department also linked the measure to its wider commitment to invest at least £200 million in farming innovation by 2030. In policy terms, that places automation alongside other productivity measures designed to improve profitability, sustainability and resilience across English agriculture rather than treating robotics as a stand-alone technology programme.
The immediate operational issue ministers are trying to address is labour pressure, particularly in labour-intensive horticulture. Defra said the funding could speed up machinery and robotic systems able to support tasks from seed planting to fruit picking, easing the pressure on holdings that struggle to recruit enough seasonal workers during harvest. For farm businesses, the significance is as much about timing as cost. If projects supported through this round become reliable enough for commercial deployment, automation could help reduce disruption during peak periods, improve the consistency of field operations and limit losses where crops are highly sensitive to short harvesting windows. Farming Minister Stephen Morgan presented the scheme as support for yields, farm profitability and the government's Farming Roadmap.
The competition is not confined to crop production. Defra said livestock applications are also in scope, pointing to Roboscientific's DETECT project, which is developing breath-analysis technology intended to identify illness in dairy cows before symptoms become more serious. That matters because the programme is being framed around avoidable cost as well as mechanisation. In the department's account, earlier detection of bovine respiratory disease could reduce stock losses, veterinary bills and additional labour demands, which makes animal health monitoring a policy fit alongside field robotics and automated harvesting.
Eligibility has also been broadened beyond the previous automation round held in 2023. Defra said applications are now welcomed from ornamental plant propagation, growing and monitoring, with an explicit recognition that technology developed in those settings could also be applied in food-producing horticulture. Forestry projects are included as well, covering tree nursery and planting operations together with woodland monitoring and management systems. The wider scope suggests this round is intended to test automation across connected land-based sectors, not only in fruit and vegetable harvesting where public discussion of farm robotics often begins and ends.
Government communications accompanying the announcement point to existing projects as evidence of the model being funded. Defra cited Fieldwork Robotics, which has developed a raspberry-picking robot and is using public support to improve durability and reliability ahead of commercial roll-out. Applications opened on Monday 3 August through the Innovation Funding Service website, according to Defra, which directed applicants there for detailed competition rules. Innovate UK said the round is intended to help businesses, researchers and farmers bring technologies from concept to on-farm application more quickly. For prospective bidders, the central test will be whether a project addresses a defined farm problem in productivity, resilience or labour management rather than offering technology in isolation.
