Honorary Consul vacancy in Baden‑Württemberg closes 15 Jan 2026

The British Embassy Berlin has opened recruitment for an Honorary Consul in Baden‑Württemberg. The official GOV.UK notice sets out a voluntary appointment recognised under the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, intended to strengthen the United Kingdom’s consular presence in south‑west Germany.

The successful appointee will support British nationals who find themselves in difficulty and, when required, assist the Embassy’s response to crises. The role also contributes to advancing British interests in the region through engagement informed by local knowledge and established networks.

Operationally, the Honorary Consul will work under the supervision of the Deputy Head of Mission and the Consul‑General in Berlin, collaborating closely with consular, political and public diplomacy teams. The Embassy notes that cooperation with other sections may be requested depending on need.

This is an unsalaried position with no pension, terminal gratuity or other benefits; a small annual honorarium is payable. The time commitment is defined as an average of no more than four hours per week, reflecting a public‑service function rather than employment.

Appointments are made for an initial term of one year. Subject to the requirements of the Superintending Post, the appointment may be renewed for a further three years at the first review, with any subsequent terms set at three years.

Applicants should demonstrate a very good understanding of Baden‑Württemberg and an established local network capable of supporting consular work and wider UK engagement. Politically active candidates-those standing for, or elected as, representatives of a political party-are not eligible.

Several conditions apply. The appointment requires security clearance from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office. An exequatur from the German Foreign Office is also required, providing the host state’s formal recognition. Appointees must avoid any occupation or undertaking that conflicts with His Majesty’s Government’s interests.

The Embassy states it is an inclusive and diversity‑friendly organisation and encourages applications from all backgrounds. The post sits within the UK’s worldwide network representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas, and is framed to build on existing ties between Baden‑Württemberg and the United Kingdom.

Candidates should submit a curriculum vitae in English of up to two pages and a covering letter in English of no more than two pages of A4 setting out motivation and suitability. Applications must be received by 23:55 on Thursday 15 January 2026 at HR.Germany@fcdo.gov.uk, or by post to British Embassy Berlin – HR, Wilhelmstraße 70‑71, 10117 Berlin.
