Natural England Finds New Seaweed Species in Cornwall Maerl Beds

Natural England has reported significant findings from underwater surveys of maerl beds off Cornwall’s south coast, including seaweeds never previously recorded in the UK and one species now confirmed as new to science. The announcement turns a scientific discovery into a marine policy question, because the case for stronger protection becomes harder to ignore when fragile habitats are still yielding basic records of what lives there. According to Natural England, the surveys found species last recorded centuries ago alongside organisms so small they had not previously been identified with confidence. The result is a reminder that England’s marine evidence base is still developing, even in coastal waters that have been studied for many years.

One of the most important findings was a minute red seaweed in the Ceramium group, sometimes known as pincer weed. Natural England said it is only a few millimetres across. Divers recovered living fragments, which allowed researchers to cultivate the species in the laboratory and sequence its DNA for the first time before confirming that it was new to science. Professor Christine Maggs, identified by Natural England as a leading authority on seaweed taxonomy, said she had first encountered the organism in the early 1980s and had been unable to resolve its identity until live material became available. The account points to a practical issue for marine monitoring: some species cannot be verified from photographs or dead samples alone, which makes specialist diving and laboratory capacity an essential part of the evidence base.

The same surveys also recorded Ulva rigida, a green sea lettuce not previously confirmed in the UK, Neofolia rosea, which Natural England said had only been found once before in the UK at this site, and Bonnemaisonia clavata, a delicate red seaweed last recorded in British waters in the eighteenth century. Taken together, the records indicate that Cornwall’s maerl beds are supporting both rare species and species that have gone unrecorded for long periods. Natural England senior marine officer Angie Gall said more than 350 species have already been recorded living on the surface of the maerl beds, with further organisms likely to remain hidden within the structure or appear at different times of year. For public authorities, that is a reminder that a single survey season is unlikely to capture the full ecological value of a site.

Maerl beds are formed by slow-growing, coral-like red seaweed and are described by Natural England as among the most biodiverse shallow-water habitats in the north-east Atlantic. Their public value is not limited to species richness. The beds provide nursery grounds and shelter for marine life, support healthier fisheries and store carbon within trapped sediments. The location is also nationally significant. Natural England said the vast majority of England’s maerl beds are in Cornwall, which means decisions affecting Cornish seabeds carry weight well beyond the county. Damage in these areas cannot be treated as easily reversible, because maerl is fragile, slow to accumulate and described in the announcement as irreplaceable.

The route to discovery is also relevant to policy. Natural England said the work followed initial reports from citizen scientist divers involved in the Seasearch project, and that surveys in 2023 and 2024 then identified extensive areas of previously unknown maerl beds off England’s south coast. The sequence shows how volunteer observations can feed into formal evidence-gathering when public bodies have the capacity to verify and extend local reporting. For seabed management, that strengthens the case for sustained mapping, repeat surveys and targeted monitoring rather than one-off assessment. If important habitats are still being found in comparatively well-observed waters, marine management plans and site-level protections depend on keeping baseline data current.

Natural England linked the findings directly to ongoing threats, citing physical disturbance such as scallop dredging alongside pollution and climate change. Seaweed specialist Francis Bunker said the discovery of a species new to science also underlined how much biodiversity remains hidden in these beds, and how much could be lost if damage occurs before the habitat is properly understood. For regulators, fisheries managers and conservation bodies, the consequence is straightforward. Where maerl beds are present, decisions on seabed use and habitat protection need to reflect both what is already known and what has not yet been documented. The Cornwall surveys widen the scientific record, but they also reduce the case for delay where fragile seabed habitats face avoidable damage.
