UK marks 100 Year Partnership with 20 million for Ukraine energy

Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy and Minister of State for Business and Trade Chris Bryant visited Kyiv on 16 January 2026 for the first‑anniversary summit of the UK–Ukraine 100 Year Partnership. The Government used the visit to announce an additional £20 million for energy infrastructure and to set out further legal and trade cooperation. (gov.uk)

While in Kyiv, Mr Lammy visited a missile strike site, met families affected by Russian drone attacks, and heard from UNHCR staff providing humanitarian support. The itinerary underscored the civilian impact of continued strikes on energy and housing. (gov.uk)

The £20 million package is intended to support urgent repair, restoration and protection of energy assets and generation, helping to keep electricity and heating available in homes, hospitals and schools through winter amid intensified targeting of the grid. (gov.uk)

The UK will support specialised training for Ukrainian commercial judges, delivered independently by the judiciary of England and Wales. This builds on established UK–Ukraine court‑to‑court engagement to strengthen commercial dispute resolution and enforcement capacity flagged by the Supreme Court of Ukraine. (gov.uk)

On 19 January 2026, the Department for Business and Trade confirmed a two‑year extension of tariff liberalisation for poultry and eggs from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2028, with the broader tariff‑free access for most goods already running until 31 March 2029. The extension is reciprocal and will be implemented via secondary legislation. (hansard.parliament.uk)

Three new UK‑led development programmes will support reconstruction, including upgrades to school facilities to keep children learning and a net‑zero housing programme to reduce demand and improve resilience. The package is designed to create future opportunities for British suppliers aligned to Ukraine’s rebuild. (gov.uk)

Analysis: For importers and retailers, tariff clarity to 2029-and to 2028 for poultry and eggs-provides a predictable duty position for long‑term contracts and supply planning. For investors and lenders, strengthening the commercial judiciary aims to improve enforcement confidence, which can lower transaction risk and support capital flows. For contractors and energy firms, the emergency funding signals near‑term tenders for repair, protection and generation projects. (hansard.parliament.uk)

The 100 Year Partnership was signed in Kyiv on 16 January 2025 by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, establishing a long‑term framework across security, economic cooperation and people‑to‑people links, including an annual strategic dialogue to track progress. Related activity around the anniversary includes the Ministry of Defence’s plan to open a business centre in Kyiv to accelerate collaboration between UK industry and Ukraine’s armed forces, complementing reconstruction and reform efforts. (gov.uk)

Key dates: the Kyiv press notice was published on 16 January 2026 and updated on 23 January 2026. The tariff extension was set out in written statements on 19 January 2026 and is scheduled to apply from 1 April 2026, subject to the laying of the statutory instrument. (gov.uk)
